Guangdong saw more than 200,000 invention patents in 2017, ranking first in China for 8 consecutive years. The province intends to promote cooperation on intellectual property (IP) in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area this year.
Guangdong received over 620,000 patent applications and granted 30,000 cases in 2017, up 36 percent and 28.4 percent respectively from the previous year, according to He Jufeng, deputy director?of?Guangdong Intellectual Property Office. In detail, applications for invention patent reached 182,600 with 45,700 cases granted.
China's invention patent per 10,000 population reached 9.8 last year, while Guangdong alone made 18.96 patents, nearly twice the national average.
Moreover, over 26,000 applications for Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) were submitted by Guangdong, accounted for 57 percent of the nation's total number, remaining on top of the country for 16 consecutive years.
He Jufeng said that enterprises are playing an increasingly important role in the field of IP. In 2017, about 56,000 enterprises in the province applied 455,400 patents, accounting for 72.53 percent of the total amount. 140,300 applications for invention patents were made by 21,800 enterprises, taking up a total of 76.8 percent.
In top ten enterprises with largest amount of granted invention patents around the nation, HUAWEI ranked second and ZTE took the fifth place with 3,293 and 1,699 cases respectively.
According to He, Guangdong will focus on nine projects concerning development of IP, which mainly include promotion IP-intensive?industries and high-quality patents, establishment of IP trading centers and building of IP protection system, etc.
